SUBJECT: Your Meeting of December 16, 1997

Attached for your review is a draft of a Historic Preservation Element for your comprehensive plan. We will be discussing this element at your meeting on December 16 at 12:00 P.M.

Some policy questions we need to address include:

• Should the Town of Fort Myers Beach continue the historic preservation program established by Lee County? Would the staff support for this program be contracted from Lee County?

• What would be the best relationship with Lee County as to historic designations? Some options include:

Contract with Lee County for historic designations to be made by the county's Historic Preservation Board.

Appoint the LPA to make historic designations.

Appoint the Town Council to make historic designations.

• Should the town take an active role in designating historic districts or individual buildings of historic merit (compared to the current system where property owners seek designation on their own)?

• What roles could the Estero Island Historic Society play in the town's historic preservation program?
